Endodontics is the specialty that focuses specifically on diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of the dental pulp, which is the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels. Endodontists perform procedures such as root canals, which are often required when the dental pulp becomes infected or inflamed. This area of dentistry is crucial for preserving teeth that might otherwise need to be extracted due to pulp issues.

In contrast, the other dental specialties have different focuses that do not directly involve the dental pulp. Pedodontics caters to children's dental care, periodontics concentrates on the teeth supporting structures such as gums and bone, while orthodontics deals with the alignment of teeth and jaws using braces and other appliances. Each specialty plays a vital role in overall oral health, but endodontics is uniquely positioned to address the health and treatment of dental pulp specifically.
